What is Radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils, and is especially prominent in Middle TN. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into a home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. The home then traps the unwanted radon inside, where it can build up.
From there, radon decays into solid radioactive particles that can get trapped in a person’s
lungs when inhaled. As the particles break down further, they release small bursts of energy.
This can damage lung tissue and lead to lung cancer over the course of one’s lifetime.
Don’t Risk It
Approximately one in ten homes in Middle TN has a radon reading of 4.0 or above, warranting the installation of either a passive or active radon mitigation system. The test involves setting up a small machine on the lowest floor of the prospective home for 48hrs. It operates electrically with a battery backup in case there is an electrical issue during the test. The results of the test will be in your inbox shortly after machine pickup.
What About Slab Homes or Condos?
Yes, even homes with a concrete foundation are subject to radon infiltration. Different areas of the country require different tests due to topography, weather and animal life. For example, homes in California require tank water heaters to be fitted with earthquake straps, whereas Florida homes must be alligator-proofed. Ok, not so much but... you get the idea. In our neck of the woods, radon is not to be trifled with.
Better to be confident knowing this subtle, yet dangerous entity is not an issue moving forward.
